Abundant sunshine, ocean breezes and copious must-dos, ranging from historic homes to trendy restaurants, make Fort Lauderdale, Florida, an amazing vacation destination. With many of its finest attractions located conveniently within walking distance of each other, this sparkling seaside city offers a unique opportunity to mix relaxation with family fun. Explore some of the city’s top activities and create your trip itinerary based on the things that say “leisure” to you.

Beaches in Fort Lauderdale, Florida are the perfect place to relax

1. Hit the Beach

It’s no surprise that hitting the beach is one of the top things to do in Fort Lauderdale with 23 miles of beautiful beaches along the Atlantic coastline. Multiple beaches in the greater metropolitan area have the Blue Wave stamp of approval from the Clean Beaches Council of Washington, D.C., including Fort Lauderdale beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Pompano Beach. Hillsboro Beach is beloved for its nesting turtles and iconic Barefoot Mailman statue.

2. Sawgrass Recreation Park

Do you want to get up close with Fort Lauderdale’s wilder side? Head here! Sawgrass Recreation Park combines educational exhibits with airboat rides through the Everglades, where you can see everything from native plants to gators, birds and fish.

3. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Fancy some outdoor recreation? Hugh Taylor Birch State Park’s the place to go. Hike the Coastal Hammock Trail, kayak through coastal dune lakes, bike on the two-mile paved trail or fish from the seawall. Locals and visitors love this natural oasis in the middle of the bustling seaside city.

The Riverwalk has plenty of things to see and places to visit

4. The Riverwalk

Located a block away from Las Olas Boulevard, the Riverwalk is a hotspot for shopping, restaurants and activities. Tropical landscaping and water views make this a refreshing destination in the heart of downtown.

5. Museums

Fort Lauderdale has a distinct cultural vibe that you can experience firsthand at museums like the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, Bellagio International Gallery and Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum. Another favorite among locals and travelers alike is the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens, a 35-acre beachfront facility that offers guided tours of the main house, outbuildings and lush grounds.

6. River Cruises

See the city affectionately dubbed the “Venice of America” from aboard vessels ranging from the Las Olas gondolas to luxury yachts to pirate ships. Cruise the city’s inland waterways while learning more about the area’s rich history or the glamorous residents of the Intracoastal Waterway.
